Infiniti, the luxury arm of Nissan has been producing some
great cars over the years and their latest offering is the Q50 which was
launched in the middle of 2013. This is a replacement for the well-established
Infiniti G37 which is one of the most powerful cars in its class. So the smart
thing that Infiniti has done is not to mess with its 328 BHP VTEC engine and
have put the same engine in Q50. The Q50 is quick, responsive and comes with adequate
standard equipment such as automatic climate control, leather seats, Bluetooth
etc. The build quality and interior is top notch with particular detail been
given to the newly installed infotainment system. This comprises of two screens
with no hard buttons. It is through this system that the driver can adjust the
feel of the steering, the throttle response, the gear configuration and so on
and so forth to suit his mood. The back seat has plenty of headroom &
legroom to accommodate two adults comfortably. It also has a decently sized
boot boasting of 116 Cubic feet of space. The
suspension is on the stiff side which gets stiffer if you opt for the sports
model. I’ll pass the sports model as it doesn’t offer much for the price. Performance
enthusiasts would appreciate the stiff suspension as that keeps the car planted
at high speeds and also helps improve handling. Now this is a very powerful
car, but most of that power is at high RPM’s. It has ample torque in the range
of 274 NM but I would have personally appreciated if Infiniti had been a more
generous in that department. Don’t get me wrong, this is a fast car and can
take on any of its German rivals. If a BMW 335i was to come along side a Q50 on
a red signal for a race, then if there is a long stretch of empty road without
any cops ofcource, chances are that the Q50 will beat the 335I. The advantage
which the bimmer would have is that it makes more torque and that too at just
1500 RMP which would instantly put it in the lead. Now the Q50 having 20 more
horses under the hood would have eventually caught up, but not until the bimmer
taking a good lead to start off with.
The Q50 also comes in a hybrid model with 350 BHP and
boasting a healthy gas mileage of 40 MPG. The Q50 on the other hand is a
thirsty car and if lucky you would get a combined gas mileage of 21 MPG. We are
still waiting to see the coupe and the convertible models for the Q50 but since
this is a successor to the G37, we are almost certain that we’ll see the coupe
and convertible soon. The Q50 might not be the prettiest looking thing out
there, but at a starting price of $37,000, it’s the bargain of the century. It’s
easily cheaper than its main rival the BMW 335I by $8k-$10k. If I had the cash,
I will buy the BMW, if I didn’t, I will be get the Q50 with a smirk on my face, that I got so much for so
little.
